THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK VARSITY REDS HOCKEY TEAM – 2016

The University of New Brunswick has had a rich tradition of sports excellence for over 100 years, but in the past 20 years its hockey teams have accomplished much in arenas throughout Canada.

From 1998 to the present the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds have won 15 Atlantic University titles and have captured the national championship on 6 occasions, while capturing 5 silver and a bronze over that same timeframe. That’s 12 medals in 20 years – an amazing feat! Only the University of Alberta Golden Bears with 15 national championships and the University of Toronto with 10 have more gold medals than the Varsity Reds. Their latest gold medal victory was this past March at the Scotia Bank Centre in Halifax. Under the guidance of Athlete Director John Richard and head coach Gardiner MacDougall, who has guided the team on the ice for 16 years, the Varsity Reds have been the epitome of excellence and consistency of any team in the very competitive Atlantic hockey conference and on the national stage.

The UNB Varsity Reds all have a motto: Champions of Athletic and Academic Excellence. To prove their focus on academics, the 2014-2015 (the latest year for statistics), the Varsity Reds hockey team placed 52% of their players on the list of Academic All-Canadians. This signifies an average grade of at least 80% in their scholastic endeavours.

Members of the 2016 Varsity Reds are: Randy Gazzola, Jordan Murray, Philippe Halley, Dylan Willick, Cam Braes, Peter Trainor, Christopher Caissey, Philippe Maillet, Rob Mignardi, Cameron Brace, Francis Beauvillier, Taylor MacDougall, Tyler Carroll, Stephen Anderson, Matt Boudens, Alex Dubeau, Matt Petgrave, Alex Wall, Colin Suellentrop, Chris Clapperton, Mike Thomas, Marcus McIvor, Etienne Marcoux, Rob Hennigar (Assoc.
