Aileen Meagher moved from Alberta to Halifax as a 7 year old in 1917. Aileen set Canadian records for the 100 and 220 yard events in 1933. She won three medals at the 1934 British Empire Games in London; gold in the 660 yard relay, and silver in the 440 yard relay and 220 yard sprint.
She was Canada’s outstanding female athlete in 1934. At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Aileen won bronze in the 4 x 100 metre relay. She medaled in the 1938 British Empire Games winning a silver and bronze.
After the 1938 games Aileen retired from competition and focused on a teaching career and became known as “Canada’s Flying School Marm. “As she approached her fortieth birthday, she switched careers again and began studying at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.
Aileen Meagher passed away in 1087 at age 76 but her name lives on in the Aileen Meagher International Track Classic hosted each year by St. Mary’s University.
