1967 was a break-through year for women paddlers. For years, the Women’s War Canoe race at the Canadian National Paddling Championships was an exhibition event. That changed at the Canadian Championship Regatta at Expo 67 in Montreal. That year, a crew of 16 from Dartmouth (14 women and coach-coxswain were in the boat) became the first to win the now recognized Championship and the H.L. Butler Trophy. It took a photo finish and even then, the judges had to use a magnifying glass to see which bow crossed the line first. And the official record shows it was the Senobe crew.
