LORIE KANE, GOLFER
Lorie Kane was born in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on Dec. 19, 1964. She began playing the game of golf at the age of 5 under the guidance of her father, Jack, at the Belvedere Club. She continued her development in her native province and attended Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S., graduating in 1986. Between 1989 and 1992 she represented Canada at numerous amateur events before turning pro in 1993. In that same year she won pro events in both Florida and on the duMaurier Ltd. Tour in Canada, earning exempt status on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour in 1996.
Playing against the best golfers in the world she had her first top 10 finish, placing 8th at the Ping Welch’s Championship in Boston, Mass. that same year. Over the next 5 years, from 1996 to 2000, Lorie had an impressive 34 top 10 finishes, and nine times she was a runner-up in tour events. It was in 2000 that she realized her dream of winning on the LPGA tour, capturing the Michelob Light Classic at Fox Run Golf Course in Eureka, Missouri. She then turned in 3 more tour victories during 2000 and 2001. In the LPGA Majors, she finished in the top 10 on 8 occasions, her best finishes in 1999 and 2005 when she placed 4th.
Her success on the course garnered two Canadian Athlete of the Year Awards – 1997 and 2000. Only Marlene Stewart-Streit and Sandra Post have won this award multiple times in the Canadian female golfing fraternity. During this same time, Lorie was honoured by the sport, winning the Heather Farr Player Award in 1998 and the William and Mousie Powell Award in 2000.
Her accomplishments both on and off the course have been recognized by many. She was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2006, to the P.E.I Sport Hall of Fame in 2014, and into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame this past March. She remains very much involved in the game today and was the top money winner on the Legends Tour in 2013. In 2015 she represented Canada at the PanAm Games in Toronto. In just these past 3 months Lorie captured back to back wins on the Legends Tour.
