Gerry “Red” Ouelette – Hockey individual athlete from New Brunswick. He also had had a major impact on youth in his community of Campbellton through coaching during his later years and in community service as City Councillor and Mayor. But his contribution and skill was as a top hockey player in the days of the six-team NHL: six years in the AHL, where he captained the Buffalo Bisons to the Calder Cup in 1969-70 and won the Rookie of the Year title with Waterloo in 1959; he was called up to the NHL Bruins on numerous occasions, and also played in the CHL and EPHL as well. In 12 years as a professional in the Bruins organization he scored 228 goals and 371 assists (599 points) in 767 professional hockey games. He also competed in the Hardy Cup as a playing coach in the early 1970s.
Gerry became Sports Director in Campbellton in 1971; was coach of the Campbellton Tigers, and director of minor hockey and minor baseball in that city… and was largely responsible for helping the professional careers of youth, including Cory LaRose and Alain Roy – with the NY Rangers and Canada’s National team.
“Red” won three Hardy Cups as coach (one as playing coach) and also competed as a cup finalist multiple times from 1972-1988. He also played top-level amateur competitive baseball from 1960-69 as player, coach and manager.
He is on the Wall of Fame in Waterloo (ON), Grand Falls & Campbellton … and was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame as an individual athlete (1989) and with the Campbellton Hardy Cup champions (1972, 1977, 1988) – three different times. The latest NBSHOF induction was in 2013.
Perhaps what is even more important is the high esteem in which he is held by his peers, sports colleagues, NBSHF members and executive staff. All point to “Red” as a fine gentlemen with great integrity and energy to help others. Congratulations!
