Hockey Statistician – Timekeeper

Ron Beard came to Nova Scotia from Toronto to join the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1974, Ron began working as a statistician for the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, the AHL farm team of the Montreal Canadians.

When the Halifax Metro Center opened in 1978, Ron continued as the team statistician and took on a new job, timekeeper.

In 1978, as statistician, Ron began calculating players shot percentages and goal tenders save percentages.

In a January 22, 1987, sports report, Montreal Canadiens’ Ron Caron saw Beard’s percentage stats work for the Vees in Halifax, took the idea back to the home team and the following year, the NHL was using the system.

Ron has handled timing keeping at Scotiabank Center since 1978.  He’s done QMJHL, AHL, NHL (when games were played in Halifax) IIHF Men’s and Women’s Championships, World Juniors, World Volleyball, Memorial Cup and Lacrosse.
